Manchester City is facing one of the most delicate situations in its history, following confirmation from the Premier League that the club has been found guilty of nearly all 115 charges for alleged financial violations. The case could have significant consequences for English soccer and for Manchester City itself, a club that has been one of the Premier League’s leading powers since winning its first title in 2012.
The investigation dates back to February 2023, when the Premier League filed 115 charges against the Abu Dhabi-owned team. Of these, 80 are related to alleged violations of financial regulations between 2009 and 2018, while another 35 were related to an alleged lack of cooperation with the investigation.
Among the allegations are claims regarding financial information that was not accurately reported, allegedly inflated figures in sponsorship deals from Abu Dhabi, and payments related to the salaries of coaches and players.
Much of the case stemmed from internal Manchester City emails published by the German media outlet Der Spiegel—documents originally obtained by the website Football Leaks, founded by Portuguese hacker Rui Pinto.
Manchester City has maintained its position of innocence. The club did not question the authenticity of the emails initially published. Still, it noted that the materials were allegedly obtained illegally and taken out of context, and it believes there was an organized attempt to damage its reputation.
Following reports of the alleged verdict, City maintained that its position remains unchanged and reiterated that the process continues under strict conditions of confidentiality. Club president Khaldoon Al Mubarak also assured that the team’s confidence and determination to prove its innocence remain strong.
What might happen to Manchester City?
According to Rule W64 of the Premier League handbook, possible sanctions range from a fine to a point deduction or even expulsion from the competition. The process also provides for an appeal, which must be filed by Friday, October 2. An Appeals Panel consisting of three members would then be formed.
Among the possible outcomes are a points deduction or relegation, although any sanction will depend on the official decisions announced once the process is concluded. The case could also have consequences for other clubs. If Manchester City were sanctioned for the alleged violations, some teams might seek compensation, arguing that they were affected by the club’s actions.
UEFA’s Track Record
Manchester City has previously faced proceedings related to its finances.
In 2020, UEFA determined that the club had committed serious violations of its financial fair play rules between 2012 and 2016 and imposed a two-year suspension from its competitions.
However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport subsequently overturned that sanction. The court found that some allegations were unsubstantiated and that others were time-barred. Instead, City was fined 10 million euros for failing to cooperate with independent investigators.
Now, the proceedings before the Premier League could open a new chapter for the club, which in recent years has won eight league titles, numerous domestic cups, and the 2023 Champions League.
The fallout could also affect Abu Dhabi’s image, as its investment in Manchester City has been cited by some as part of a soft-power strategy through sports.
