Old Trafford holds an important part of Manchester United’s history, and now its fans will have the opportunity to take home a small piece of that history.
The club has put sections of the turf from the iconic stadium up for sale for 125 pounds, about 165 dollars. The playing field was completely removed last June, down to the foundation, in a process that hadn’t been carried out in 14 years.
The turf was removed by Tony Sinclair, the stadium’s maintenance manager, as part of efforts to renovate the playing surface and improve both player comfort and drainage.
Some parts of the old turf were preserved for later display in glass cases, while other pieces will now be available to Manchester United fans.
For decades, Old Trafford has been the scene of great moments for the Red Devils, especially during Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure. During that period, the team won 13 Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies, and numerous FA Cup championships.
But the historic stadium has also witnessed some difficult nights for United. Among them are the 5-0 loss to Liverpool, the 6-1 defeat to Tottenham, and the recent loss to Brighton in the Carabao Cup. Against Brighton earlier this month, the Manchester side held a 2-0 lead but ended up losing 3-2.
Now, as the club looks to renovate the Old Trafford playing field, its fans will be able to keep a small piece of the surface that was part of some of the most important chapters in Manchester United’s recent history.
