Mexico dominates the Leagues Cup: Where to watch the semifinal matchups

The 2026 Leagues Cup is guaranteed to have a Liga MX champion after Toluca, León, América, and Monterrey secured the four available spots in the semifinals, leaving Major League Soccer without any representatives in the title race. For the first time in the tournament’s modern era, the final will feature exclusively Mexican clubs.

America vs. Monterrey

The semifinal matches will take place this Wednesday, September 2, in the United States. Toluca and León will kick off the day’s action at Shell Energy Stadium. The Diablos advance after eliminating Austin FC with an offense led by Alexis Vega, Helinho, and Federico Viñas. León, the 2021 tournament champion, is looking to return to the final; a victory would also secure them direct qualification for the next CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Toluca vs. Leon

The second match will pit América against Monterrey at Dignity Health Sports Park. Las Águilas, under head coach Guillermo Almada, enter the match undefeated after combining experience with young players from their youth academy, with Brian Rodríguez and Henry Martín standing out on offense. For its part, the Monterrey team, led by Matías Almeyda, will seek to advance with the help of players such as Oliver Torres, Diego Rissi, Luca Orellano, Orbelín Pineda, and Hugo Cuypers.

The presence of the four Mexican teams breaks the recent dominance of the MLS, which had crowned Inter Miami, the Columbus Crew, and the Seattle Sounders in the last three editions of the Leagues Cup. In addition to the trophy, the top three finishers in the tournament will earn a spot in the 2027 CONCACAF Champions Cup, keeping the race for qualification open for the teams advancing to the third-place match. The grand final and the third-place match are scheduled for Sunday, September 6.
