The World Cup kicked off on Thursday, and fan festivals across the United States began welcoming fans from across the world. For those from or visiting the New York/New Jersey area, the commencement of the official fan festivals began in Queens, New York at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Throughout the Group Stage of the World Cup, this iconic New York venue will open its doors and invite fans for live match broadcasts, performances, special appearances, and more. With free general admission tickets for most days, the New York soccer community has an immersive place to enjoy the beautiful game!
Mexico Fans Dominated the Crowd
With the opening match taking place between Mexico and South Africa, the large majority of the crowd featured fans supporting the co-host nation, Mexico. While there were flurries of jerseys from Argentina, Colombia, and Ecuador supporters, the crowd was filled with a sea of green. The energy was there for Mexico as chants of “México!” echoed through the venue.
Where Else to Watch the World Cup in NJ/NY
Along with the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, fans in the area can also enjoy free watch parties in all five NYC boroughs and across the bridge in New Jersey. Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, NJ will he hosting on select dates throughout the entire tournament. Rockefeller Center will be the hub in Manhattan, with the iconic rink transforming into a vibrany pitch surrounded by live match broadcasts. This will be available to the public from July 6 to July 19.
The Bronx Terminal Market will be hosting this weekend, June 13 and 14, while Siuh Community Park in Staten Island will be open from June 29 to July 2. Lastly, the Brooklyn Fan Zone will be held at Brooklyn Bridge Park for select dates across the entire tournament.
