Ronald Araujo puts Uruguay on alert: Bielsa seeks solutions

The Uruguayan national team faces an unexpected concern just days before its debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Ronald Araujo’s injury has set off alarm bells in the Celeste camp and is forcing coach Marcelo Bielsa to rethink some key elements of his defensive game plan.

The Barcelona defender was considered a sure bet for Uruguay’s starting lineup at the start of the tournament. However, the defender’s recent physical issues have cast doubt on his availability for the match against Saudi Arabia, scheduled for June 15.

Araujo Can’t Guarantee His Presence in the Opener

The uncertainty grew after Ronald Araujo himself acknowledged that he still cannot guarantee whether he will play in the first World Cup match. The situation brings concern because the defender is one of the most versatile players on the squad. Marcelo Bielsa had noted in previous press conferences that he viewed Araujo as an option both to play right back and to serve as a center back.

His possible absence would force the Argentine coach to alter the plans he had been working on during World Cup preparations.

Bielsa loses a key defensive player

One of Uruguay’s main problems lies in the lack of natural alternatives in certain defensive positions.

If Araujo does not recover in time, Guillermo Varela appears to be the only specific option to play right back. Although there is the possibility of using Federico Valverde in that position, Bielsa considers the Real Madrid player a key piece in midfield, where he is assured a starring role.

The absence of the Barcelona defender would also directly impact the central defense.

Options to partner Giménez

Everything pointed to Ronald Araujo starting alongside José María Giménez in the center of the defense. However, the outlook has changed due to the injury and the physical issues that the Uruguayan captain has also been dealing with in recent weeks.

Given this scenario, Bielsa could opt for a defensive line featuring Mathías Olivera on the left and Sebastián Cáceres or Santiago Bueno as his partner in the center.

Although both players have international experience, Araujo’s absence would represent a significant loss in terms of leadership, speed, and anticipation.

A concern that could extend beyond the debut

The situation is causing concern not only regarding the match against Saudi Arabia but also for the rest of the group stage.

If Araujo’s recovery is prolonged, Uruguay’s defensive options would be considerably reduced in a tournament where physical demands will be at their peak and where rotations often become a necessity.

Marcelo Bielsa and the medical staff continue to evaluate the player’s progress on a day-to-day basis, while Uruguayan fans await positive news about one of the national team’s most important players.

For now, Ronald Araujo’s availability for the World Cup opener remains an unknown that has all of Uruguay on edge just days before the start of their campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
