Spain took just 10 minutes to open the scoring today after an underwhelming, scoreless opening-match performance against Cape Verde.
Lamine Yamal got the starting nod after coming off the bench in the team’s previous game due to a lingering hamstring injury. Spain and its fans were happy to see that Luis de la Fuente made multiple changes to the lineup, with Yamal’s inclusion being the highlight.

Defining Moments in an Early Start
Failing to score vs. Cape Verde over 90 minutes, a dominant start to the match for Spain was essential. At the heart of most of the early action was Mikel Oyarzabal, who created the opening goal with a great run down the wing and a lovely cross over to Lamine Yamal.
With his goal, Yamal became the 8th-youngest goalscorer in World Cup history (18 years & 343 days)
Spain continued their early authority via Oyarzabal’s first goal of the night. From a corner-kick, the ball landed in Dani Olmo’s feet, who flicked the ball into a dangerous area. Aymeric Laporte nodded the ball on, with possession falling for Oyarzabal, who finished the chance to double Spain’s lead
Just three minutes later, Spain got their third of the game. Once again, it was Oyarzabal and Olmo in the thick of the action. Cucurella sent a great diagonal cross, which Olmo flicked on, before Oyarzabal scored once again.
Tame Second Half
Due to a great first half, Luis de la Fuente was able to make some rotations. Oyarzabal and Yamal were both subbed off at halftime, with much-needed rest for Lamine Yamal as he returns from injury.
Spain’s final goal of the match came early in the second half via a Saudi Arabia own goal. Following a flick, Cucurella volleyed the ball towards the goal. Saudi goalkeeper, Al Owais, made a great save that unfortunately deflected off Al Tambakti and into his own net.
Saudi Arabia are still alive
Following their opening match draw vs. Uruguay, Saudi Arabia are still in a great position to qualify for the knockout rounds despite today’s poor performance. A positive result vs. Cape Verde on Friday would be more than enough for them to qualify for the Round of 32.
Next up for Spain
Spain will close the Group Stage in Guadalajara with a challenging contest vs. Uruguay on Friday.
