The King of France! Mbappé Surpasses Messi and Pelé

Carlos Armando Torres Bujanda Jun 16, 2026 2 min read

Kylian Mbappé is no longer just a superstar; he’s a history-maker. During France’s 3-1 victory over Senegal at the 2026 World Cup, the 27-year-old forward scored a spectacular brace that not only secured the three points for “Les Bleus” but also completely rewrote the annals of international soccer.

After a difficult first half in which goalkeeper Édouard Mendy made his life difficult, Mbappé unleashed his magic in the second half. In the 66th minute, he broke the deadlock to score his 13th World Cup goal, and in stoppage time, he unleashed a long-range rocket to seal his 14th.

With this sublime performance, the French “No. 10” shattered multiple historic records in a single night:

1. The Undisputed King of France (and in record time): With his two-goal performance, Mbappé reached 58 international goals, surpassing Olivier Giroud (57) to become the all-time leading scorer in the history of the French national team.

  • The staggering stat: Kylian’s efficiency is out of this world. While Giroud needed 137 matches to reach his total, Mbappé shattered the record in just 99 appearances, boasting the best goals-per-game ratio in his country’s history (far surpassing legends like Henry, Platini, or Zidane).

2. Farewell to Messi, Pelé, and Fontaine: By scoring his first goal of the match (his 13th World Cup goal), Mbappé tied Lionel Messi and the legendary Just Fontaine on the all-time list, leaving Pelé behind. With his second goal of the night, he pulled ahead of them to reach 14 goals, climbing to third place on the tournament’s all-time list.

3. On the Hunt for the All-Time World Cup Record: Playing in just his third World Cup (after winning the title in 2018 and finishing as runner-up/Silver Ball winner in 2022), Mbappé has already tied the legendary German striker Gerd Müller (14). Now, the top spot is within reach: he only needs to surpass Brazil’s Ronaldo Nazário (15) and the all-time record holder, Germany’s Miroslav Klose (16).

4. A Staggering Comparison with Messi: If greatness is measured by the speed with which it is achieved, the Frenchman’s numbers are staggering. Lionel Messi took 26 matches spread across five World Cups to reach 13 goals (an average of 0.50 goals per game). Kylian Mbappé reached that same milestone in just 14 matches, tearing up the nets with an impressive average of 0.86 goals per game, nearly twice as efficient as the Argentine star.

France entered this World Cup as a heavy favorite alongside Spain, and with Mbappé playing at this historic level and surrounded by teammates like Ousmane Dembélé, Michael Olise, and Désiré Doué, a third World Cup title seems like an increasingly real possibility.
