The wait is over: Rafa Márquez is now the new head coach of El Tri

Erick Monroy Jul 8, 2026 2 min read

The Mexican National Team is entering a new era. The Mexican Soccer Federation officially announced the appointment of Rafael Márquez as head coach of the national team, confirming a transition designed to ensure continuity following the Mexican team’s outstanding performance at the last World Cup.

The appointment of the legendary former defender is not a spur-of-the-moment decision. After serving as an assistant coach to Javier Aguirre during the most recent campaign, Márquez takes the helm of the Tricolor with a thorough understanding of the team and the sports structure aimed at maintaining the path of growth toward the next World Cup cycle.

The challenge facing the so-called “Kaiser of Michoacán” will be significant. He takes over a Mexican national team that is coming off one of the most solid runs in recent years, after Javier Aguirre concluded his third stint at the helm of the national team by winning the 2024–2025 CONCACAF Nations League and the 2025 Gold Cup—titles that marked the culmination of his tenure.

The Federation is banking on a natural succession and a figure who enjoys the dressing room’s respect and a deep connection to the national jersey. Rafael Márquez knows better than most what it means to play for the Tricolor, having competed in five World Cups and been part of the team that won the 1999 Confederations Cup, in addition to lifting the Gold Cup in 2003 and 2011.

His career as a player also supports this decision. During his time at FC Barcelona, he built an elite list of achievements by winning two UEFA Champions League titles, four Spanish league championships, and one Club World Cup, establishing himself as one of the most successful Mexicans in European soccer.

Before taking on this challenge, Márquez also strengthened his coaching career through a training program at Barça Atlètic, where he worked on developing young talent. He later joined Javier Aguirre’s coaching staff, an experience that ultimately made him the natural choice to lead the Mexican National Team’s new project.

With the official announcement, Rafael Márquez begins a new chapter aimed at maintaining the Mexican National Team’s leading role in the region under a leader who fully understands the history, demands, and responsibility that come with representing the national team.
