Tension in the upper echelons of world football has reached a boiling point. Faced with growing pressure on the 56-year-old Swiss-Italian leader, FIFA came to the defense of its president, Gianni Infantino, on Saturday, issuing a strong warning: any attempt to undermine or change the presidency must be carried out exclusively through the organization’s statutory mechanisms.
The political landscape is beginning to shift dangerously ahead of the 2027 presidential elections, and officials in Zurich are not willing to give ground. Through an official spokesperson, FIFA denounced what it considers a “concerted and ongoing effort” designed to destabilize the institution and its current president, who assumed the top post in February 2016.
“FIFA will not support, facilitate, or tolerate any process related to the election of the FIFA President that is inconsistent with the FIFA Statutes, democratic procedures, and the established governance framework,” the organization stated in a strongly worded communiqué.
The 20-billion-project that fractured soccer
The current political crisis did not arise out of nowhere. The trigger was the controversial proposal to create FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a new commercial subsidiary designed to consolidate the organization’s lucrative rights and tournament operations.
This ambitious project envisaged opening the door to outside investors to acquire up to a 20% minority stake. With the company’s total valuation estimated at a whopping $20 billion, FIFA sought to raise up to $4.2 billion in capital.
However, the initiative ran into a wall of fierce opposition and had to be withdrawn. This rejection was the spark that ignited an all-out political battle, leading UEFA and various federations to openly question Infantino’s leadership and intentions.
UEFA is making threats, but Infantino has his “army”
The European confederation (UEFA) is not backing down. It has maintained an extremely critical stance and is demanding written guarantees that no commercial initiative similar to the FFE’s will be presented again. Tensions have escalated to such an extent that there are already threats to boycott competitions organized by FIFA.
But Infantino is not alone; he has a powerful bloc of allies keeping him firmly in the presidential seat.
- African backing: The Confederation of African Football (CAF) unanimously reaffirmed its support for him, securing him the votes of 54 of its 211 member associations.
- Strength in the Americas: Infantino also maintains crucial and influential support in South America, notably from leading federations such as those of Argentina and Mexico.
With the presidential elections scheduled for March 2027, the battle has moved from the boardroom to the political arena.
“FIFA’s responsibility is to its 211 member associations and to soccer around the world. We will not allow anything to distract us or divert us from our goal of strengthening the organization,” the governing body concluded.
