England Starting 11 vs. Croatia: Big decisions from Tuchel in World Cup debut

England will open its World Cup campaign today against Croatia at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Thomas Tuchel will make his World Cup coaching debut against a tough Croatian side that has given England trouble in recent tournaments.

Bukayo Saka, who has been a key part of the England squad, starts on the bench today. Tuchel opted for his Arsenal teammate, Noni Madueke, to start the match at RW over him.

Another big debate heading into the World Cup was who would be Tuchel’s number 10 for the tournament. With many suggesting Morgan Rogers was the favorite for the spot due to his great form with Aston Villa, Tuchel has decided to go with Jude Bellingham. The English No. 10 had an injury-riddled season, but his impact at the international level seems to triumph over his inconsistent club form.

John Stones, who has recently left Man City, has been chosen to start today in defense. Stones has struggled for form and consistent playing time due to his injury record and Man City’s vast CB depth. The English veteran played in just 18 games this season, and has featured in only 38 total games over the last two seasons. Regardless, Tuchel seems to trust Stones and hopes the experienced defender can put together a sufficient tournament.

Lastly, Tuchel has chosen to start the World Cup with Gordon at left wing over Marcus Rashford. Gordon, who recently signed with FC Barcelona for €80m, will have a lot to prove due to his new club and price tag.
