Curaçao wrote one of the most unexpected chapters of the 2026 World Cup. Thanks to a monumental performance by goalkeeper Eloy Room, the Caribbean team withstood all of Ecuador’s attacks and secured a scoreless draw—earning the first point in its World Cup history.
The 68,598 fans in attendance at Kansas City Stadium witnessed a historic result for a country with a population of just over 150,000. After suffering a 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Germany in their debut, Curaçao found the perfect hero in their goalkeeper to keep their hopes alive and celebrate a draw that feels like a victory.
From the opening minutes, Ecuador made it clear that it was going for the win. Just two minutes in, Enner Valencia received a long pass from Moisés Caicedo, entered the box, and fired a cross-goal shot that Eloy Room deflected into a corner kick with a great save. It was the first sign of a night that would see the goalkeeper emerge as the undisputed star.
Curaçao also showed character and responded with attempts by Tahith Chong and Sherel Floranus, capitalizing on some defensive miscues by the South American side, while their fans celebrated every chance from the stands.
Ecuador’s response was immediate. John Yeboah, Pedro Vite, Gonzalo Plata, Pervis Estupiñán, and once again Enner Valencia tried to break the deadlock, but they were consistently thwarted by an inspired Room, who exuded confidence throughout the first half and repeatedly foiled the chances of the team coached by Sebastián Beccacece.
The second half followed the same script. Moisés Caicedo took a shot from outside the box, Gonzalo Plata came close with a header, and Kevin Rodríguez also looked to catch the goalkeeper off guard, but the Caribbean goalkeeper responded every time.
Curaçao, solid on defense, occasionally abandoned the counterattack, though they also produced a memorable play when Juninho Bacuna executed a spectacular move inside the box before testing Hernán Galíndez, who responded effectively.
Ecuador’s pressure increased as the minutes ticked by. Enner Valencia once again went head-to-head with Room on a header, Pedro Vite fired a powerful shot that forced another great save, and, with six minutes remaining, the forward had an unbeatable one-on-one opportunity that once again ended up in the goalkeeper’s hands.
There was still one final thrill to come when a cross from Angelo Preciado crashed off the crossbar in the 89th minute, reflecting the frustration of a team that dominated, created chances, but never found the finishing touch it needed.
The final whistle sparked celebrations among the players in blue. Curaçao earned the first World Cup point in its history, thanks to an unforgettable performance by Eloy Room, the man who turned his goal into a wall and seriously complicated Ecuador’s prospects in Group E of the 2026 World Cup.
