A header by Diop tied the game in the final minutes of the second half, and Senegal went on to defeat the Netherlands in a penalty shootout to advance to the Round of 16 at the World Cup.
The Dutch took the lead in the 70th minute thanks to Cody Gakpo, who celebrated in a special way, surrounded by his teammates, given the family tragedy he had recently endured. But the story didn’t end there; Issa Diop emerged as the hero for the Moroccans.
The Fulham center back popped up in the box to head the ball in and tie the score at 1-1.
In the penalty shootout, the Dutch missed three shots—one of which was saved by Morocco’s goalkeeper Bono—while the African shooters delivered when it mattered most.
Morocco will now travel to Houston to face Canada on July 4. The Netherlands returns home empty-handed.
