36 years is nothing! Scotland wins again at the World Cup

Carlos Armando Torres Bujanda Jun 13, 2026 3 min read

Coach Steve Clarke had made it very clear that he did not enjoy his two previous stints at the helm of Scotland during their lackluster Euro campaigns. However, the biggest stage in soccer has brought him. and his entire team, a very different fate.

With a shot by John McGinn that deflected off a defender and beat goalkeeper Johny Placide in the 28th minute, Scotland defeated Haiti 1-0 on Saturday in Group C play at the World Cup.

“When the ball hit the back of the net, you could feel the excitement of the Scottish fans,” McGinn said after the match.

The victory has historic significance. Scotland, making its first appearance in the tournament since France 1998, secured its first World Cup win since 1990, when they defeated Sweden 2-1.

“We came here to get three points. We did it, and now we’re looking ahead,” said Scottish midfielder Lewis Ferguson.

Surprise at the top of Group C

Earning these crucial points has meant much more than just ending a drought. Earlier in the day, the group favorites, Brazil and Morocco, drew 1-1, catapulting Scotland directly to the top of the Group C standings.

“Obviously, now we have a little less pressure than everyone put on us for this game,” Clarke said. “The players deserve to be the team that finally managed to pull this off at a World Cup.”

Haiti fought hard but is still searching for its first point

For its part, Haiti, whose only previous World Cup appearance was in West Germany in 1974, remains in search of its first point in the tournament. The Grenadiers had multiple chances in the second half but failed to secure the equalizer.

“We’re playing at an extremely high level. But here, a single mistake punishes you,” said Haiti’s coach, Sébastien Migné.

Key moments of the match:

  • The goal (28’): It came from a rebound following a mistake by Che Adams in the box. The ball bounced off Placide, leaving it for McGinn, whose shot from about 12 meters was deflected by the Caribbean defense into the back of the net.
  • The near-goal by Scotland (17’): Captain Scott McTominay created space and fired a powerful shot that grazed the crossbar.
  • Caribbean chances: Haiti’s best opportunity came in the 74th minute, when Ruben Providence sent a dangerous cross to Wilson Isidor, who was unable to get a shot on goal. In the 84th minute, Frantzdy Pierrot, who, interestingly, emigrated from Haiti to Boston at age 11, connected with a header that went just centimeters wide of the left post.

All of this took place before an overwhelming presence of the Tartan Army, the loyal Scottish fans who filled Gillette Stadium.

What’s next for both teams?

  • Scotland will remain in the city to face Morocco at Gillette Stadium next Friday.
  • Haiti will travel to Philadelphia, where it will face the difficult task of taking on Brazil, also on Friday.
