Armando “Hormiga” González once again made his mark in European soccer. The Mexican forward was the star of the second matchday of the Greek Cup, where he scored two goals and provided an assist to help Olympiacos defeat Volos NFC 3-2.
The Mexican forward had a stellar night and made it clear that he’s brimming with confidence with his new team, as he was directly involved in all three of his team’s goals.
Full Confidence for “Hormiga”
González made his first mark on the scoreboard in the 42nd minute. After a corner kick and a header that was parried by the goalkeeper, the Mexican stayed alert to the play and capitalized on the rebound to send the ball into the back of the net, putting his team up 1-0. Olympiacos went into halftime with the lead, and just five minutes into the second half, “La Hormiga” struck again.
This time, the Mexican forward leaped high to head the ball into the far post, making it 2-0. With that, González recorded his first two-goal game in European soccer, a performance that quickly took center stage.
But his impact didn’t end there. In the 68th minute, the Mexican was decisive once again, setting up Colombian Gustavo Puerta, who found himself alone in front of the goal and scored to make it 3-0.
A few minutes later, in the 71st minute, González was substituted, leaving behind a nearly flawless performance.
Olympiacos struggled in the final minutes
With the Mexican player’s exit, Volos NFC began to mount a comeback. The opposing team found openings and managed to significantly narrow the gap. The first goal came in the 79th minute, while Volos scored their second in the 89th, making the score 3-2 and putting pressure on Olympiacos in the final minutes.
In the end, “La Hormiga’s” team managed to hold on to the lead and secure the victory, though they struggled again against the same opponent just a few days after letting a lead slip away.
The previous Saturday, Volos had salvaged a 1-1 draw in the 76th minute during Matchday 3 of the Greek Super League. This time, however, Olympiacos managed to hold on until the end thanks to the lead built up during Armando González’s stellar performance.
