After 52 goals for El Tri and a career across Europe’s elite clubs, Mexico’s all-time leading scorer will be a headline analyst for the 2026 World Cup.
Mexico’s all-time leading scoring and 3x World Cup participant shared his tournament predictions in a media Q&A panel with DraftKings. Futbol Mundial was among the media members invited to participate in this session, which offered a glimpse into how one of Mexico’s most recognizable football figures views this summer’s tournament.
Dark Horses for the World Cup
The team at Futbol Mundial had the honor of chatting with the Legend about his career and his dark horse predictions for this World Cup. “My dark horses are Mexico, Norway, Uruguay, and Croatia”, Hernandez said when asked which teams would surprise this summer.
Hernández will know better than most what a successful World Cup run can mean, having represented Mexico on the world’s biggest stage. Mexico will be looking to emulate their past performances as hosts, with El Tri reaching the quarterfinals when they hosted in both 1970 and 1986.
From Guadalajara to Old Trafford
Born into Mexican football royalty, both his father and grandfather represented El Tri on the world stage, Hernández’s path was destiny. After developing in the Chivas youth academy, his clinical breakout in Liga MX caught the eye of legendary head coach, Sir Alex Ferguson. In 2010, he made history as Manchester United’s first-ever Mexican signing.
At Old Trafford, Chicharito became a global phenomenon. Revered for his lethal movement and “super-sub” efficiency, he averaged 130.2 minutes per goal in the Premier League. His five-year spell in England yielded two Premier League titles and a start in the 2011 UEFA Champions League Final.
Across Europe, he built a reputation as a world-class poacher:
• Real Madrid: A crucial loan spell in 2014–15, resulting in a FIFA Club World Cup title.
• Bayer Leverkusen: Dynamic Bundesliga success, consistently finishing as the club’s top scorer.
• West Ham & Sevilla: Further tenures in the world’s most demanding leagues.
An Unmatched International Legacy
For the Mexican National Team, Hernández remains statistical royalty. Between 2009 and 2019, he scored 52 goals in 109 appearances. His international resume is defined by relentless consistency on the biggest stages. He is one of only three Mexican players to score in three consecutive FIFA World Cups: 2010, 2014, and 2018. He shares the nation’s all-time tournament scoring record of 4 goals with Luis Hernández, and swept both the Golden Boot and MVP awards during Mexico’s triumphant 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup run.
The MLS Chapter and Final Homecoming
In 2020, Hernández moved across the Atlantic to inherit the star-power mantle left by Zlatan Ibrahimović at the LA Galaxy. Tasked with leading the MLS giants as team captain, Chicharito delivered under immense pressure. He scored 38 league goals across four seasons, highlighted by a spectacular 20-goal campaign in 2022. However, a devastating ACL tear in June 2023 prematurely halted his Hollywood chapter. Looking for a fairytale ending, Chicharito returned home to Chivas in 2024. Injuries during his spell in Guadalajara led to him leaving the club at the end of 2025.
A New Chapter in the Spotlight
As his playing career quietly pauses, Hernández’s cultural footprint has only grown. Known in his later playing years for his raw honesty, “Chicha” has never shied away from the microphone. Now serving as an analyst for the World Cup, the legend is bringing that trademark candor to international audiences. He may no longer be wearing the historic number 14 jersey on the pitch, but Chicharito’s voice remains as central to the narrative of Mexican football as it has ever been.
