A last-minute goal completely turned the tide in Philadelphia. Just when it looked like the match would end in a scoreless draw, Ivory Coast was rewarded for its persistence and defeated Ecuador 1-0 thanks to a last-minute goal by Amad Diallo. The defeat was particularly painful for Ecuador, which entered the tournament on the back of a 19-game unbeaten streak and finished second in the South American qualifiers, behind only Argentina. Moreover, they played in a favorable atmosphere, with the majority of the 68,274 fans at Lincoln Financial Field supporting La Tri.
After the match, Ecuadorian captain Enner Valencia acknowledged that the difference lay in a lack of decisiveness in front of the opponent’s goal. The veteran forward noted that his team created enough opportunities but lacked the necessary luck to convert them.
Ivory Coast, competing in its first World Cup since 2014, took a significant step toward its goal of advancing to the knockout stage for the first time in its history. Led by Yan Diomande’s offensive play, the Elephants found the reward they had sought throughout the match.
In the next Group E match, the Ivorians will face Germany on June 20, while Ecuador will look to bounce back when they take on Curaçao in a match that already looks decisive for their World Cup hopes.
