Rafael Márquez was officially introduced as the new head coach of the Mexican national team, and beyond the athletic challenge, he made it clear what one of his top priorities will be at the helm of the team: building a squad with which Mexican fans can identify.
For Márquez, reestablishing that connection will be essential. The coach stated that he will seek to build a competitive team, capable of giving its all no matter who they face, and one that proudly represents Mexico.

The new coach made it clear that he does not intend to start from scratch. Continuity will be a key part of his project—something that, he said, gives him confidence because he already knows several players and is familiar with the environment of the Mexican national team.
“I know I won’t be starting from scratch; there’s significant continuity,” said Márquez, who also highlighted the opportunity to have worked alongside Javier and what it meant to him to learn from a figure he considers essential to Mexican soccer.
One of the main objectives will be to maintain the identity the team displayed during the World Cup on home soil. Márquez wants that style of play to remain while, at the same time, reestablishing a strong connection between the players and the fans.
“We’ll work on our identity, making sure the team plays to be competitive,” said the coach, who is clear that the journey must continue all the way to the 2030 World Cup in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.
A new coaching staff and key additions to the project
To tackle this new challenge, Márquez will be joined by Andrés Guardado, Juan Manuel Lillo, and Vidal Paloma as assistant coaches. Xabier Mancisidor will serve as goalkeeper coach, and Pol Lorente will be in charge of physical conditioning.
Another key aspect of his project will be internal competition. Márquez said he already has a list of 60 players in mind who could get a chance with the Mexican national team and made it clear that each player must prove at his club that he deserves to be considered.
The coach also placed special emphasis on young players. He intends to instill in them from the outset what it means to represent Mexico and to strengthen the development process for the youth national teams so that players reach the senior national team better equipped.
Rafa Márquez’s vision, therefore, appears to be clear: continuity, identity, competition, and a stronger connection with the fans. Now the work begins to turn this vision into a Mexican national team that once again inspires pride among its people.
