Not quite! Belgium can’t get past Iran, but pick up another point

Carlos Armando Torres Bujanda Jun 21, 2026 2 min read

Belgium was forced to play 20 minutes with one less player and could not manage more than a 0-0 draw against Iran in front of a packed crowd at the stadium in Los Angeles, California.

Once again, the Iranians complained about the treatment they received from U.S. authorities, who are forcing them to leave the country immediately after the game, without federation officials or support staff. Nevertheless, they managed to earn another point and will head into the final matchday with a chance to advance to the next round when they face Egypt in Seattle.

Meanwhile, Belgium disappointed once again. The Red Devils maintained 59 percent possession but failed to create any real danger, except for one occasion when they forced Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand to make a miraculous save.

Neither Lukaku, De Bruyne, nor Trossard managed to break through the Iranian defense.

In the 68th minute, a breakaway by an Iranian player forced Belgian defender Nathan Ngoy to commit a foul, and since he was the last man, he was shown a red card.

However, not much happened beyond that despite the man advantage for Iran. Everything will be decided on the final matchday of Group G, which will be played on Friday, June 26, with New Zealand facing Belgium in Vancouver, Canada, and in Seattle, Egypt will face Iran. Both games will kick off at 8:00 p.m. local time.
