Tottenham set to win the race for in-demand Mateus Fernandes, ahead of Premier League rivals Manchester United.

Tottenham appear to be showing real ambition this transfer window, with an £85 million deal agreed with West Ham for Portuguese wonderkid Mateus Fernandes. Reported tonight by David Ornstein, a deal of this fee would be a record transfer for the club.

The midfielder seemed destined to join Manchester United, with the player being heavily linked to the Red Devils since the end of the Premier League season. However, Tottenham entered the fray over the last few weeks and were said to be pushing hard to get a deal done fast. Spurs were willing to meet West Ham’s hefty price tag set on Fernandes, plus accommodate the player’s wage demands, while United were hesitant to pay the money needed to land the player.

Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi was said to be pushing hard for the club to bring Fernandes to North London. This is not surprising considering Tottenham’s lack of progressive passing midfielders. Fernandes has the potential to be the perfect solution to this issue. Not only is he great technically and going forward, but he is also impressive on the defensive end — ranking number one for defensive duels, interceptions, and defensive duels won, compared to every other U21 midfielder in Europe’s top seven leagues.

Fernandes came through the Sporting CP academy, featuring five times for the Portuguese side. He then made a move to England in 2024, signing for Southampton. However, Fernandes only stayed one season, with the Saints being relegated to the Championship.

Thanks to some impressive individual performances, Fernandes secured a move to West Ham. Again, the youngster was a standout player, but couldn’t prevent his side from being relegated. This marks consecutive relegations for Fernandes, raising concerns for Spurs fans. This shouldn’t take away from how exciting this signing should be for the fans.

Only 21 years of age with bags of potential, and having had some of Europe’s top clubs such as Real Madrid and Man United sniffing around over potential moves this summer, this is a real coup for Spurs, regardless of the hefty transfer fee.

At just 21 years old and full of potential, this player has attracted interest from some of Europe’s top clubs, including Real Madrid and Manchester United, over a potential transfer this summer. Despite the significant transfer fee, securing this talent should be considered a major win for Spurs.
