Since their World Cup victory in 2014, Germany has played a total of 10 World Cup matches, winning just four of them.
2018 World Cup
As defending champions, Germany finished bottom of Group F at the 2018 World Cup with just three points.
- 1-0 loss to Mexico
- 2-1 win vs. Sweden
- 2-0 loss to South Korea
In a group they were favored to win, Germany became the first title holders to be eliminated in the first round since 1938. This surprising early exit shocked fans and pundits alike, as Germany had a strong legacy in international football. But since their win in 2014, their pedigree in international tournaments has significantly decreased.
2022 World Cup
With a competitive group featuring Spain, Japan, and Costa Rica, many were worried about Germany having a repeat of their failed 2018 campaign.
- 2-1 loss to Japan
- 1-1 draw vs. Spain
- 4-2 win vs. Costa Rica
Germany’s opening game loss to Japan marked their second consecutive World Cup in which they lost their opening match. They were ultimately eliminated in the group stage for the second consecutive tournament, losing out on goal difference to Spain.
2026 World Cup
Despite a first-place finish and a favorable Round of 32 matchup vs. Paraguay, Germany were once again eliminated at an early stage in the World Cup.
With good wins over Curaçao and Ivory Coast, Germany clinched first place in Group E before playing their final match vs. Ecuador. With a full squad, Germany were upset by Ecuador on Thursday before losing to another South American team, Paraguay, on Monday.
- 7-1 win vs. Curaçao
- 2-1 win vs. Ivory Coast
- 2-1 loss to Ecuador
- 1-1 (4-3 pk) loss to Paraguay – Round of 32
