MLS schedule for August 29-30: Preview and Where to Watch

Following the midweek Leagues Cup matches, the MLS returns with 13 matches on Saturday.

The MLS was poorly represented in midweek, with all four Leagues Cup teams getting eliminated in the quarterfinals. Now, with the focus shifting back to league play, the playoff race will continue with most teams still in the picture. In the Eastern Conference, just seven points separate 7th-place NYCFC and 15th-place Columbus Crew. Out West, just seven points currently separate 1st-place Vancouver and 6th-place St. Louis City.

Big tests for Eastern Conference leaders

Nashville, Eastern Conference leaders, will look to continue their win streak as they host FC Cincinnati, who are undefeated in their last four matches. It’s been an amazing season for Nashville, whose 49 points from 21 games are the most ever at this stage of an MLS season. Cincinnati pose a threat and performed well against the league leaders last season, winning both matchups.

Inter Miami is currently ten points behind conference leaders Nashville and has a great opportunity to end their winless streak against Montreal, the last team they managed to defeat. Montreal have struggled lately, winning just one game in their last 10 regular-season matches.

Just below Miami are Chicago, who are three points behind with a game in hand. The Fire are taking a trip to Seattle to start the matchweek as they look to bounce back from a disappointing midweek result in the Leagues Cup.

Big Western Conference battle between Houston and San Jose

Houston, currently in 2nd place, will host 4th place San Jose, two teams in very different form at the moment. Houston have won four of their last five matches, while San Jose have lost four straight. Signs point to Houston taking care of business, winning 11 of 15 home meetings against the Earthquakes. In general, Houston’s home form has been great and is unbeaten in eight straight at Shell Energy Stadium, keeping five clean sheets in the process.

Western Conference leaders Vancouver will look to keep their top spot on the road against Sporting Kansas City. The Whitecaps have outscored Kansas City 8-0 across their last three matchups, and will look for help from Brian White, who has already scored 12 goals this season.

LAFC will travel to Washington, DC to face a DC United side that is just outside the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference. LAFC are winless and have scored just twice in four MLS matches after netting 10 in their previous three. Fortunately for them, DC United are in even worse form, having won only one of their last eight MLS matches and drawing six of those.
