Atlético de San Luis pulled off the big upset of Matchday 6 of the 2026 Apertura after taking the field at BBVA Stadium and decisively defeating the Rayados de Monterrey 1-3. With a masterclass in efficiency and lethal counterattacks, the team from San Luis silenced the Monterrey crowd and, in the process, secured its first win of the tournament so far.
The cold shower for the home team came right out of the locker room. Just five minutes in, San Luis caught the Monterrey defense off guard when David Rodríguez found himself completely alone inside the box, finishing with great finesse with his left foot as goalkeeper Luis Cárdenas came off his line.
After the early blow, Rayados took control, dominated possession, and pushed forward toward the opponent’s goal, but left too many gaps at the back. The visiting team didn’t let the opportunity slip away, and in the 36th minute, they launched a textbook counterattack that Rafael Llorente capitalized on, sending the home team into halftime trailing 0-2.
Spurred on by their fans, Monterrey came out fighting in the second half. Roberto de la Rosa fired the first warning shot in the 63rd minute with a deflected shot, and seven minutes later, Luca Orellano rattled the post. The Blue-and-Whites’ persistence finally paid off in the 73rd minute, when Hugo Cuypers slotted the ball in with his right foot to make it 1-2, reigniting hopes of a comeback.
However, the joy was short-lived. Just as Monterrey was pouring forward in search of the equalizer, Atlético de San Luis found another open lane. In the 78th minute, the Potosí-based team executed another perfect transition that Óscar Macías finished off by finding the back of the net, sealing the final 1-3 score and handing the Rayados a defeat on their home turf.
