In a match that came alive in the final stretch, Switzerland found its scoring touch to rout Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles and take control of its group. However, beyond the valuable three points for Switzerland, the match marked an unprecedented milestone for Caribbean soccer: Rubén Vargas became the first player of Dominican descent to score a goal in World Cup history.

A Caribbean Touch to the Swiss Celebration

After a first half of fruitless dominance and high tension against a tenacious Bosnian squad, the resistance finally broke in the 74th minute. The 20-year-old substitute, Johan Manzambi, struck the ball with a spectacular volley to open the scoring.

The balance tipped definitively in Switzerland’s favor when Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic was sent off for a hard foul on Breel Embolo on the edge of the box. With a man advantage, the historic moment arrived. In the 84th minute, Embolo threaded a pass into the box, and Rubén Vargas, whose mother is Swiss and father is Dominican, finished with total authority to make it 2-0. This wonderful moment etched the Dominican Republic’s name into the record book of football’s premier tournament.

A wild finish in front of 70,000 fans

The numerical advantage and the opponent’s fatigue set the stage for a frantic finish:

  • In the 90th minute, Vargas played the role of provider, setting up Manzambi to score his second goal of the match and make it 3-0.
  • In stoppage time, Ermin Mahmic pulled one back for the “Dragons” after a series of rebounds in the box.
  • In the final play of the match, Swiss captain Granit Xhaka sealed the 4-1 victory from the penalty spot.

The Group Standings and a Record-Breaking Run

With this resounding victory, Switzerland dispels the doubts raised last week following its last-minute 1-1 draw against Qatar and emerges as the favorite to advance to the knockout stage. For its part, Bosnia, coming off a draw against co-host Canada, still has a mathematical chance of qualifying in what is only its second World Cup appearance.

Despite the painful defeat, the match produced another historic milestone: Bosnian forward Edin Dzeko played 63 minutes, becoming the fourth outfield player to start a World Cup match at the age of 40, joining legends such as Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo.
