The United States took an important step toward winning their 2026 World Cup group by defeating Australia 2-0 in a crucial match, in which both teams entered with three points after winning their opening games.

Far from resting on their laurels, USA kept up the pressure and continued to threaten the opponent’s goal. Their persistence paid off before halftime, when Alex Freeman stepped up in the 43rd minute to extend the lead and give his team greater breathing room.
Australia tried to respond, but faced a well-organized, intense U.S. team determined to capitalize on the opportunity to move closer to the next round. The Australians struggled to create consistent danger and break the control exerted by the home side.
With the lead built on Burgess’s own goal and Freeman’s strike, the United States found itself in a position to secure three valuable points in the fight for a spot in the Round of 32.
Now the United States can approach its June 25 match against Turkey in Los Angeles with more composure, while Australia will have to wait until its game against Paraguay on the same day to find out if it has a chance to finish second or third in the group.
