Víctor Manuel Vucetich returns to Tigres with a dual role. The experienced coach was announced as the club’s new vice president of sports and will also serve as interim head coach of the first team. The arrival of “King Midas” comes after Guido Pizarro’s departure from the Tigres bench. In his new role within the sports organization, Vucetich will replace Gerardo Torrado, who held that position for the past two years.
Vucetich takes over the team on an interim basis
As part of the changes made by the board, Tigres also confirmed that Vucetich will lead the team on an interim basis. The coach will replace Hernán Elizondo, who took the reins during the Leagues Cup and subsequently led the team in matches against Querétaro and Atlas, corresponding to Matchdays 3 and 4 of Liga MX.
Elizondo will return to his duties with the U-21 team, while Vucetich will take on the challenge of trying to turn around a team that is off to a rough start.
“King Midas” returns with experience
Vucetich has an extensive track record in Mexican soccer and is one of the country’s most successful coaches, with 15 trophies to his name. One of the highlights of his career was his time with Rayados de Monterrey, where he won a league title and the historic third consecutive CONCACAF championship.
His most recent coaching stint was with Mazatlán a year ago. With the Sinaloa-based team, he coached for two tournaments and led 34 matches, posting a record of six wins and finishing last in the standings during that period.
Tigres continues to rebuild
Tigres’ on-field situation has led to significant changes in recent years. Since Ricardo Ferretti’s departure, the club has had as many as seven head coaches over the last five years: Miguel Herrera, Diego Cocca, Marco Antonio Ruiz, Robert Dante Siboldi, Veljko Paunovic, Guido Pizarro, and Hernán Elizondo.
The changes have also extended to the club’s sports management. Mauricio Culebro stepped down as team president after five years, and Carlos Emilio González has held that position for just over four months.
The on-field outlook is not promising either. Tigres sits in third-to-last place in the overall standings, with just one point and three losses. In addition, the team was eliminated from the Leagues Cup and is looking to get back on the path that led to its last league title in the 2023 Clausura.
Vucetich begins his third stint with Tigres
Vucetich had stepped away from coaching, but has now decided to return to try to put out the fire at Tigres. This will be his third stint at the helm of the university team. His first stint was during the 1995–96 season, and he later led the team in the 1999 Winter and 2000 Summer tournaments, campaigns in which the team finished in the middle of the standings. Now, “King Midas” returns to Tigres with a new mission: to temporarily take over as head coach and, at the same time, join the club’s sports management team.
