The Rocky Curse: Brazilian Fans Take Precautions After Ecuador Misfortunes

Lluvia Zazueta Jun 19, 2026 3 min read

In Philadelphia, there’s an unwritten rule that many fans already know: You admire Rocky Balboa, take a photo with him, and imitate him by raising your arms in a victory gesture, but you never dress him in your team’s colors. And the Brazilians, just to be safe, decided not to tempt fate.

Just hours before the match between Brazil and Haiti at the 2026 World Cup, hundreds of fans visited the famous Rocky statue located in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. They took selfies, sang, celebrated, and posed in their yellow jerseys, but not a single one dared to put even a single piece of clothing on the legendary bronze boxer.

The reason? The so-called “Rocky Curse.”

It may sound like an urban legend, but in Philadelphia, it’s a tradition that many take very seriously. For years, visiting fans have dressed the statue in their teams’ jerseys, scarves, and flags, only to see those teams end up defeated by the local teams. The superstition has spread beyond American football, baseball, and basketball, and has now reached the World Cup.

The most recent incident occurred just a few days ago. Ecuadorian fans decked out the statue in their national team’s colors before facing Ivory Coast. The result wasn’t what they’d hoped for: the Africans secured a 1-0 victory with a goal by Amad Diallo in the final minutes.

The incident was enough to prompt Brazilian fan groups, such as the Green and Yellow Movement, to issue warnings on social media. “It is strictly forbidden to put a Brazil jersey on the Rocky statue!” they wrote on Instagram, accompanying the message with images of the famous monument.

Even Pennsylvania tourism organizations joined in on the joke. “Ecuador dressed Rocky last weekend. Coincidence? History says no,” they posted on social media, inviting visitors to enjoy the city but making it clear that Rocky didn’t need a new uniform.

The Brazilians took the hint. The statue remained untouched throughout the day, while dozens of fans chose to mimic the classic pose of the character created by Sylvester Stallone. To prevent any excesses, the monument was even cordoned off and guarded by security personnel, dubbed by some fans as the “guardians of Rocky.”

“This is a historic moment for Brazil,” said Lorival Guerreiro, a fan who traveled from the city of Limeira. “We came to celebrate our team, but it’s best not to push our luck.”

The Rocky statue has become one of the most visited sites in Philadelphia. It welcomes around four million tourists each year and is almost as popular as the Liberty Bell. What began as a movie prop ended up becoming a symbol of the city and, for many, a talisman that must not be tampered with.

Brazil heads into its match against Haiti under pressure to secure a victory after a 1-1 draw against Morocco in its opener. Although Carlo Ancelotti’s team has more than enough football prowess to prevail, its fans preferred not to take any unnecessary risks.

Because anything can happen at a World Cup… but if there’s one thing the Brazilians learned in Philadelphia, it’s that it’s best not to mess with Rocky.
