Modern soccer has gotten us used to stories of millionaire talent scouts and elite academies, but Roberto “Pico” Lopes’s journey to the 2026 World Cup is, quite simply, the stuff of movies. The defender, born in Dublin, Ireland, and currently playing for Shamrock Rovers, appeared before the media today in Houston on the eve of the crucial match in which Cape Verde will seek to secure its spot in the next round against Saudi Arabia.
Lopes’ story defies all expectations. A few years ago, he was splitting his time between playing soccer part-time and working at a bank or in real estate in Ireland. His call-up to the national team didn’t come from a scout in the stands, but rather from a direct message on LinkedIn sent by Cape Verde’s coach.
Ironically, “Pico” ignored the first message because it was written in Portuguese. It wasn’t until months later, when the federation contacted him in English, that his life changed forever, as he became eligible to play thanks to his father, Carlos, a native of the island nation.
“There’s no golden ticket—you have to believe”
During the press conference on Texas soil, Lopes reflected on the incredible journey that led the “Blue Sharks” to the World Cup, where they’ve already pulled off a major upset by earning a heroic draw against Spain in the group stage.
“I think it’s important to believe—to believe that we can be here,” Lopes declared firmly. “That’s the most important thing for qualifying for this kind of tournament: belief. There’s no ‘golden ticket,’ so you have to believe and work hard.”
The defender also highlighted the Cape Verdean federation’s tireless efforts to build a competitive national team drawn from the country’s diaspora. “The federation has done a great job, seeking out talent available around the world to try to qualify for these major tournaments. The first time I joined the team, the question was whether we could qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)—and we did. Then came the World Cup. But you have to believe,” he emphasized.
A Do-or-Die Match in Texas
Bolstered by their historic draw against Spain, Cape Verde heads into the match against Saudi Arabia with high hopes and qualification in their own hands. The game promises to be an intense tactical battle against an Asian opponent that is always tenacious and difficult to beat in these situations.
Cape Verdean fans are clinging to the dream, and players like Roberto Lopes have shown that, in soccer as in life, the biggest opportunities sometimes come when you least expect them—even through a professional social network.
