Canada crushes Qatar 6-0 and earns its first World Cup victory

The Canadian national team made history on Thursday by securing its first-ever World Cup victory after routing Qatar 6-0 at BC Place. Led by a brilliant hat trick from Jonathan David, the North American team all but secured its spot in the knockout round in a match marked by the home team’s dominance and the visiting team’s disciplinary chaos.

The Canadian offense came alive early to the delight of the 52,497 fans in attendance, including Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

In the 16th minute, Cyle Larin opened the scoring by capitalizing on a rebound from Qatari goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada, netting his second goal of the tournament. From there, Jonathan David took center stage. The forward extended the lead in the 29th minute with a superb right-footed volley, and before halftime, he made it 3-0 amid a flurry of rebounds in the six-yard box.

David capped off his perfect night by scoring his third goal in stoppage time of the second half, joining Argentina’s Lionel Messi as the only players to record a hat trick so far in the 2026 World Cup. With this offensive outburst, Canada tripled its all-time World Cup goal total in a single game.

Red Cards and Concerns Over Koné

The match turned into a nightmare for Qatar, a team that ended up playing with nine men. In the 33rd minute, Homan Ahmed was sent off for a hard foul on Tajon Buchanan. Although the referee initially called a penalty and issued a yellow card, the VAR review changed the decision to a free kick and a straight red card.

The situation worsened early in the second half when Assim Madibo received another red card for a brutal tackle on Ismaël Koné. The Canadian midfielder had to be carried off the field on a stretcher with a visibly serious injury to his left leg, causing deep concern among his teammates.

Sealing the humiliation

Taking advantage of their two-man advantage, Canada showed no mercy. Nathan Saliba, who had come on as a substitute for the injured Koné, made it 4-0 with a flawless free kick in the 64th minute. In the 75th minute, Qatar’s misfortune continued with an own goal by Mohamed Manai, before David sealed the final score.

Although Canadian captain Alphonso Davies was available after recovering from a hamstring injury, the coaching staff decided to rest him, and he did not see any playing time.

With this result, Qatar remains winless in World Cup history, while Canada has firmly established itself in Group B, where Switzerland also shone earlier in the day with a 4-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
