In a game that seemed all but over, Belgium found an extra gear late and scored two late goals to send the match into extra time. With just seconds left until a potential penalty shootout, a foul on Tielemans led to a lengthy VAR check and the eventual winner for the European side.
A strong first half for Senegal
Despite a near-identical amount of possession in the first half, Senegal were the enforcers throughout the first 45 minutes. The first big chance came just 14 minutes in, when Ismaila Sarr lunged with a first-time shot, hitting the post before somehow being able to put in the rebound from point-blank range.
As they continued to attack, Senegal found the back of the net just before the hydration break. Sadio Mane put in a great ball towards the penalty spot, where Sarr flicked a first-time header against the post. Habib Diarra was the quickest to react and tapped the ball into an empty net.
Momentum continued in Senegal’s favor, and they got their second goal just six minutes into the second half. Moussa Niakhate’s brilliant long ball found Sarr running in behind. The Crystal Palace forward took a brilliant touch with his chest before striking a half-volley past Courtois. It was Sarr’s fourth goal of the World Cup, as he further solidified his importance in this Senegal side.
A wonderful Belgian comeback
With a plethora of off-target chances, Belgium were unable to find a way back into the match until the 86th minute. Thomas Meunier pounced on a loose ball and played a superb ball across to Romelu Lukaku for a neat, first-time finish. With momentum in their favor and just a few minutes remaining, Belgium got their equalizer via Youri Tielemans. Leandro Trossard put in a looping cross towards the far post, and Tielemans rose above Senegal keeper Diaw to head the ball into an empty net.
After an uneventful 30 minutes of extra time, the match was decided in the 120th minute after a penalty was awarded to Belgium. The referee was sent to the pitchside monitor and awarded a penalty after deeming that Tielemans was set to get to Moreira’s low cross first, and Camara took away his foot in the process.
The Aston Villa midfielder buried the penalty and scored his second of the night to send Belgium to the next round of the World Cup.
